John Force’s 1,000 Victories Not Unbreakable
The incomparable John Force notched his 1,000th round win en route to beating Ron Capps in the opening round of eliminations Sunday. Many would say that winning 1,000 rounds of competition in NHRA drag racing is just about unbreakable in today’s climate. I would disagree. Not because the task is easy but because the way [...]
Only Dad stood in her way
Appearing in her third straight final round and holding the Funny Car POWERade points lead, Ashley Force seemed destined for that first win sooner rather than later.
Since we’re talking about the Force family here, there also had to be drama attached — today in Atlanta, Ashley had to get past her father John Force [...]
Hot Passes in Atlanta
No surprise to anyone who’s spent time in this part of Georgia; track temperatures hit 120 degrees F as Cory McClenathan, Tim Wilkerson, Ron Krisher and Andrew Hines all held onto their low qualifier positions from Friday night.
In Top Fuel, Las Vegas Wally winner Cory Mac reveled in his team’s consistency, with a 4.562 seconds [...]

In an announcement made jointly by the NHRA and the Coca-Cola corporation, the POWERade brand will be replaced by Coca-Cola’s energy drink brand, Full Throttle, as title sponsor of the NHRA’s professional series in 2009. The announcement also revealed the deal includes a two-year partnership extension through the 2013 season and the new series will [...]
On a roll in Vegas
(I apologize for sketchy coverage of the NHRA event in Las Vegas this weekend; I was struck down by some heinous virus at the Samsung 500, and any functional moments have found me dealing with the 15 April tax filing deadline.)
A quick summary of the action….
Noteworthy items from Friday and Saturday qualifying include a [...]
‘Hot’ Rod Fuller Unhurt After Personal Car Fire in Las Vegas
NHRA Top Fuel driver Rod Fuller was uninjured following a harrowing car fire to his personal vehicle near his home in Las Vegas on March 31. Fuller was traveling less than 45 mph at the time of the incident.
Big Wins, Big Smiles at the Dragstrip
Race conditions today were relatively cool and cloudy; much improved from the hot, sunny 1320 that gave drivers and tuners fits yesterday.
A standing room only crowd was 10 deep against the fence at Houston Raceway Park to watch the action.
There were plenty of upsets and excitement.
In Top Fuel, a huge Round One matchup sent [...]
Sounds of Funny Car
If you miss being at the track, I’ve tried to capture some of the sounds for you.
A new service called Utterz allows users to record and upload audio and video files; most conveniently from a cell phone, but other digital files work, too.
Today in Houston at the NHRA Spring Nationals, I used my cell phone [...]
Field is set at Spring Nationals
A hot, sunny Texas track made it tough on the 2008 O’Reilly Spring Nationals competitors, but thousands of fans were basking in the good weather at Nitro Alley.
In Top Fuel, Alan Bradshaw is putting together a great season with two low qualifier awards in a row. He followed up a Gainesville pole with Houston’s [...]
Nitro Cowboys Up in Texas
It’s great to be back at the track here at Houston Raceway Park for the NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals. Unlike last year’s rain-a-thon Spring Nats, the weather remains dry and relatively cool, with a slight cloud cover.
I hope to bring Fast Machines some short video interviews with Top Fuel’s Tony Schumacher and Funny Car’s [...]
